Process Description

Pen and ink is an old art form dating back to medieval times, which came to America from Europe. It is the first form of illustrating and made its appearance in Texas possibly with the early publishing of newspapers and books. Materials used in very old times were quills and ink, and now have developed to drafting pens. Each stroke is done individually and by hand using a very meticulous process. The result is an intricately detailed piece of art that realistically captures the subject.

I majored in college in art and advertising where I learned about the pen and ink medium of drawing. Through practice, I have developed my own style and technique. All drawings are done from conception to the finished piece free handed by me and rendered in ink by me.

After a thorough study and research of my subject, I am ready to do a sketch in pencil. All originals are drawn on 140-pound watercolor paper, which makes my work more difficult because of the rough surface of the paper. The fine detail, shading, depth, and texture is applied one tiny stroke at a time with a .03 drafting pen. Because it is very difficult to remove or erase pen and ink once applied, high concentration is needed to avoid mistakes and create the perfect drawing. My originals and lithographic prints are then layered with watercolor washes, some taking as many as 8 to 10 different layers using a technique I have developed and mastered throughout the years.

Pen and ink is a precise and detailed form of drawing that creates a beautiful and timeless piece of art. I hope you enjoy viewing my drawings on this website. Please contact me with any questions.
